The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) made a sorrowful announcement after recovering the body of a missing individual from a pond in Martha’s Vineyard on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Tafari Campbell, a valued employee and personal chef of former President Barack Obama.
Divers from the MSP Underwater Recovery Unit were responsible for locating and retrieving Tafari Campbell’s body at Edgartown Great Pond.
President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama expressed their heartfelt grief over the loss of Campbell, who had become a cherished member of their family. Having met him during his tenure as a skilled sous chef at the White House, they admired his creativity and passion for food, recognizing its power to bring people together. As time went on, the Obamas grew closer to Campbell, appreciating his warm, fun, and incredibly kind personality, which brightened their lives.
After leaving the White House, the Obamas asked Campbell to remain with them, and he generously accepted the offer. Thus, Campbell continued to work with the Obamas, becoming an integral part of their lives. The news of his passing has deeply saddened the former first couple, and they join everyone who knew and loved him in mourning the loss of this exceptional man. Their thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sherise, and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin, during this difficult time.
According to reports, Campbell was visiting Martha’s Vineyard when the tragic incident occurred. Fortunately, the Obamas were not present at the residence when the accident took place.
The MSP’s Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers were responsible for discovering the victim’s body. The MSP Underwater Recovery Unit managed to retrieve Campbell’s body from approximately 100 feet away from the shore, submerged under 8 feet of water.
The unfortunate incident unfolded on Sunday when Campbell, who was paddleboarding at the time, went missing. Authorities initiated a search operation, but it was suspended temporarily to allow dive teams, flight crews, and other responders to reassess and prepare for further steps, as they faced challenges in locating the individual.
As the investigation continues, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit is actively looking into the circumstances surrounding Tafari Campbell’s untimely passing. The loss of this beloved and talented chef has left a profound impact, not only on the Obama family but also on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
