FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency Appoints Mrs. Hannatu Danladi-Chiya as WASH Ambassador
FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency Appoints Mrs. Hannatu Danladi-Chiya as WASH Ambassador ((Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) ) for the nation’s capital. Mrs. Danladi-Chiya, who is the wife of the Chairman of Kwali Area Council, will play a crucial role in advancing the vision of achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status for the council and advocating for enhanced hygiene practices among stakeholders.
Dr. Mohammed Dan-Hassan, the Executive Director of FCT RUWASSA, announced the appointment during a conferment ceremony held in Abuja. He underscored that this initiative aims to align with the state of emergency targets set by the FCT regarding water and sanitation issues.
Previously, RUWASSA expressed its commitment to establishing Kwali Area Council as a model for ODF status, with plans underway to construct 10,000 toilets at strategic locations across the FCT.
Dr. Dan-Hassan praised Mrs. Danladi-Chiya for her unwavering dedication to the development of Kwali Area Council and the well-being of its residents. He highlighted that this project, guided by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, is focused on enhancing access to fundamental sanitation and hygiene practices in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal six.
“Her appointment was in recognition of her interest in promoting sanitation and hygiene, as well as the role she plays in eradicating open defecation and other diseases associated with that,” noted by Dr. Dan-Hassan. He commended Mrs. Danladi-Chiya for her philanthropic efforts and her commitment to assisting vulnerable groups in the community.
Dr. Dan-Hassan expressed optimism that Nigeria would achieve a significant reduction in open defecation by 2025, provided that all states and the FCT implement their respective roadmaps and devise effective strategies. Currently, only 105 out of 774 local governments have attained ODF status.
The selection of Kwali as the model area council for the FCT was based on recommendations from development partners and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, leading to numerous pilot projects being initiated in the region.
In her response, Mrs. Hannatu Danladi-Chiya attributed her success to the support of her husband, who encouraged her to actively engage in social activities and contribute to the progress of Kwali Area Council. She pledged to extend the ODF campaign to the forum of Wives of Local Government Chairmen (WALGON) and emphasized her commitment to upholding monthly sanitation exercises.
“I wish to call on my colleagues in other area councils to emulate and take up the challenge of making their communities habitable,” she urged.
Supervisory Councilor of Environment, Ibrahim Shuaibu, commended Mrs. Danladi-Chiya’s resilience and determination in promoting family welfare and social development. He applauded her for consistently holding council officials accountable for maintaining a clean environment and thanked FCT RUWASSA for their prudent choice in appointing her as Ambassador of WASH in their pursuit to end open defecation in Kwali and across the FCT.
