In a significant move aimed at streamlining airport security procedures and reducing the challenges faced by passengers during manual bag checks, Federal Government Allocates N3 Billion for Airport Scanner Upgrade to Streamline Security Checks for the installation of advanced scanners at major international airports across Nigeria.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, revealed this development to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Keyamo detailed that the approved fund is intended for the supply and installation of cutting-edge, customized explosive and narcotic detection screening systems. These state-of-the-art systems are poised to be deployed at major international airports, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

The Minister highlighted the transformative nature of these advanced systems, equipped with remote and dual-view capabilities, which are set to revolutionize security procedures at airports. Instead of manual bag searches, these modern detection machines will swiftly identify explosives or illicit substances as bags pass through the screening process.

Keyamo underscored the aim of these scanners, stating, “It’s what Nigerians will be interested in because since I came to office, we have been inundated with complaints of the harrowing experiences that passengers go through at the airports where they have to physically search their bags.”

He emphasized the inconvenience caused to passengers by multiple agencies conducting manual bag searches, including NDLEA, Immigration, Customs, and EFCC. The Minister likened the proposed system to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States, where detection machines streamline security checks.

The initiative seeks to alleviate the concerns of travelers and enhance airport security by deploying cutting-edge technology to detect potential threats efficiently. This investment in modernizing airport security infrastructure is envisioned to significantly improve the travel experience for passengers while bolstering security measures at key entry points across the country.
