History of Uniabj
The University of Abuja (UofA)is a tertiary institution in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. It was established on January 1st, 1988 as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run both conventional and distance learning academic programmes. It was the first University in the country to assume such a dual mandate at inception.
The university took off from a temporary site, made up of three blocks of building meant for a primary school in Gwagwalada, tagged the “mini – campus”. Academic activities started on the mini – campus in 1990. The distance learning offices of the university are located within the Abuja municipality (Area 3 Garki)
The Key organs and officers involved in the administration and governance of the university are: the Governing Council, the Senate, the Congregation and the Convocation, the Vice-Chancellor, Two Deputy Vice Chancellors (Administration and Academic), the Registrar and Secretary to Council, the Bursar, the University Librarian, Deans of Faculties, Directors of Centres and Institutes and Heads of Department. All these organs and officials are supported by the Committee system which is the pivot of administration of the university.
The Governing Council: The Council consists of the Chairman who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the university, the Vice Chancellors (Administration and Academic) a representative of the Federal Ministry of Education, four persons appointed by the National Council of Ministers representing broad national interests, four persons appointed by the Senate from its members, one persons each appointed by the Congregation and the Convocation among their members and the Registrar as Secretary to Council. The council is the highest policy-making organ of the university.
The Senate : The Senate is the highest University authority on academic matters. It is the general function of the Senate to organise and control teaching at the university and the admission and discipline of students, as well as the promotion of research. The Senate comprises the Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Professors, the University Librarian, Deans, Directors and Deputy Deans, Heads of Academic Departments, one member of academic staff representing each Faculty and the Registrar as Secretary.
The Congregation : The Congregations is made up of all members of staff of the university who were university graduates by appointment. The Vice-Chancellor is its chairman and the Registrar is Secretary. Congregation meetings, being statutory, are called to afford members opportunities to have a say in matters affecting their welfare.

The University has two campuses: the Mini Campus located in Gwagwalada Area Council about fifty four kilometres from the city centre, and the Main Campus situated along Abuja-Airport Road, some few kilometres from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
At inception, the university temporarily operated fully at the Mini Campus in Gwagwalada, which covers an area of 33 hectares.
The Main Campus is Mohammed Maccido Road, Airport Rd, Abuja
The Mini Campus is at No 1 UniAbuja Road off Phase 1,Gwaglada Abuja.
How to Gain Admission into University of Abuja .
Admission Requirements for Undergraduate.
Admission requirements for undergraduate courses at the 100 level are credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics which must be obtained by a candidate at no more than two (2) sittings. Three (3) of the credit passes must be in subjects relevant to the degree course applied for. This is in addition to an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized and conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB); and a Post-UTME screening organized by the University.For Direct Entry(DE) admission however, a candidate must possess at least two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or equivalent in addition to five (5) credit passes in other subjects including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II).
Admission Requirements for Postgraduate
Admission requirement into the postgraduate programmes are Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor’s Degree in addition to credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II) which must be obtained by a candidate at no more than two (2) sittings. For admission into any Ph.D programme of the University, applicants must have obtained a weighted average score of 60% or letter ‘B’ grade in the Master’s degree relevant to the field of study in addition to five (5) subjects credit passes including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II) which must be obtained by a Candidate at no more than two (2) sittings.
Institute of Education (IOE)
It is Popularly called the Sandwich programme, it is a part-time programme specifically designed for teachers with a background in education (NCE) to obtain a degree. That is why all programmes of the IOE are education programmes. Lectures usually hold when students of secondary and primary schools are on long vacation (so that they will have the space to attend without it affecting their jobs as teachers). Like the CDL&CE, this programme does not require JAMB and Post UTME as obtained in the case of regular students. Admission requirement into the part-time programme at the 100 level are credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II) which must be obtained by a Candidate at no more than two (2) sittings. Three (3) of the credit passes must be in subjects relevant to the degree course applied for. Admission requirement into the 200L Sandwich programme is the National Certificate of Education (NCE) upper credit, in addition to credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics which must be obtained by a Candidate at no more than two (2) sittings.

Conclusion
The University of Abuja, Gwagwalada is a good University for every Nigeria citizen and the present Vice Chancellor is Prof.Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah who obtained a Bachelor’s and Masters’ degree in Literature-in-English.
The topography of the Main Campus is a sight to behold-the hills encircling the campus in a warm embrace, the vast expanse of lush green plants are very pleasing to behold-creating a perfect, warm and peaceful atmosphere for research, teaching and learning. The Main Campus houses the Senate Building, Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Engineering, Management Sciences, Sciences, Postgraduate School, Centre for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (CDL&CE), the University Printing Press, students’ hostels, Centre for Gender Security Studies and Youth Advancement, among others. University of Abuja Business School is located in the city centre in the university’s annex in Kado, close to NAF Conference Centre.
