Labour Leaders and Activists Converge at Unity Fountain, Abuja to Protest Fuel Price Hike

In a display of unity and resolve, prominent figures from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and various other organizations have gathered at the iconic Unity Fountain in Abuja for a peaceful protest against the recent fuel price increase and perceived policy shortcomings of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

Leading the charge is Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, accompanied by a delegation of officials representing different sectors. Among them is Muhammed Ibrahim, the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, alongside representatives from the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the National Union of Road Transport Workers, among others.

The protest aims to draw attention to what the NLC deems as “unfriendly” and “anti-poor” policies that have affected the well-being of the Nigerian populace. At the heart of the matter is the recent surge in fuel prices, a development that has sparked widespread concerns and discontent.

Unity Fountain, nestled in the heart of Abuja, has long served as a symbolic rallying point for major protests. Its significance as a catalyst for change is palpable, as it has borne witness to pivotal demonstrations that have shaped Nigeria’s sociopolitical landscape.

Notably, the venue played host to the birth of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, which was a poignant response to the kidnapping of schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State. It was here that the collective voice of concerned citizens reverberated, demanding action and justice.

Unity Fountain’s legacy as a launchpad for social movements continues, as it also set the stage for the #EndSARS remembrance protests and the #RevolutionNow demonstrations. Its tranquil surroundings have served as a backdrop for impassioned speeches, fervent calls for change, and the unification of purpose-driven individuals.

As the sun sets over Unity Fountain, a resolute spirit permeates the air. The NLC, alongside fellow protesters, stands poised to make their voices heard once again. As they assemble and prepare for the task ahead, the echoes of past movements infuse the atmosphere, underscoring the enduring power of unity and peaceful protest in the pursuit of a better future for all Nigerians.
