Miyetti Allah President Urges Government Attention to Transform Nigeria Dairy Industry
Miyetti Allah President Urges Government Attention to Transform Nigeria Dairy Industry (Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN), Baba Ngelzarma, has revealed that Nigeria expends a staggering $1.7 billion annually on milk imports. Ngelzarma emphasized the urgent need for the Federal Government to prioritize the dairy industry by allocating more resources in the national budget.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ngelzarma underscored the economic potential of the livestock sector, asserting that if properly harnessed, it could significantly contribute to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He called attention to the current state of the dairy industry and urged the government to play a more active role in its development.
“The livestock sector has not and never received the needed attention from the government; the only support we have gotten is the vaccination of cows. The aspect of livestock production, marketing, transportation, processing, among others, is left in the hands of the pastoralists; the entire value chain of cattle is not harnessed by the government,” Ngelzarma stated.
He highlighted the paradox of Nigeria having the largest population of livestock in comparison to neighboring countries but lagging behind in milk production due to the sector’s neglect. Ngelzarma urged the government to address this imbalance and invest in the comprehensive development of the entire value chain.
“The country’s current reliance on milk imports, with an annual expenditure of $1.7 billion, underscores the economic potential that remains untapped within our borders. Allocating resources to the dairy industry in the budget will not only boost local production but also reduce our dependency on foreign sources,” Ngelzarma explained.
The Miyetti Allah President stressed the importance of transforming the livestock sector, encompassing production, marketing, transportation, and processing, to maximize its contribution to the nation’s economic growth. He called for strategic policies and interventions to empower pastoralists and unlock the sector’s untapped potential.
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Ngelzarma urged the Federal Government to recognize the livestock sector’s role in diversifying the economy and creating employment opportunities.
By prioritizing the dairy industry, the government has the opportunity to harness the nation’s vast livestock resources and stimulate sustainable economic development.
