Nigerian Army Mourns the Passing of Former COAS, Maj.-Gen. Chris Alli . The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Nigerian Army following the passing of retired Maj.-Gen. Chris Alli, a former COAS.
The Army’s condolences were expressed through a statement released by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, and made available in Abuja on Sunday.
Nwachukwu confirmed that Maj.-Gen. Alli passed away after a brief illness in the early hours of Sunday at the Military Hospital in Lagos.
The statement praised the late former COAS for his dedicated service to the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the nation itself, leaving a lasting legacy in various roles.
“Alli’s commitment and dedication to duty were evident as he ascended through the ranks, serving in key positions including Director of Military Intelligence (DMI) and eventually becoming the 9th COAS in November 1993, serving until his retirement in August 1994,” the statement read.
Gen. Alli, born on December 25, 1944, in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, commenced his military career on October 20, 1967, as a member of the Emergency Short Service Combatant Course. Throughout his tenure, he held diverse roles encompassing staff, instructional, command positions, and served as the Military Administrator of Plateau State.
“On receiving the saddening news of his demise, COAS Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja extended sincere condolences to the late COAS’s family, friends, and colleagues. He offered prayers for the repose of his soul and strength for the family during this difficult period,” the statement concluded.
