Tight security at NEMA stores as hoodlums loot FCT warehouses

In response to the recent spate of warehouse looting incidents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, security measures have been heightened at National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warehouses nationwide.

The move comes after suspected hoodlums looted food warehouses in Abuja on Sunday, prompting authorities to take swift action to prevent further incidents. Additionally, soldiers thwarted an attempted raid on a factory warehouse in the Idu Industrial District, Jabi, Abuja, arresting five attackers in the process.

Footage of the thwarted raid depicted armed soldiers detaining the suspects, who allegedly attempted to target a factory engaged in the production, processing, and packaging of various agro-commodities.

These events reflect a broader trend of attacks and looting targeting warehouses and food trucks across multiple cities, driven by economic hardships and a rising cost of living. Last week, youths reportedly stole food items from trucks stuck in traffic along Kaduna Road in the Suleja area of Niger State.

The Abuja incident unfolded around 9:30 am on Sunday, shortly after hoodlums attacked a warehouse belonging to the Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat of the FCT Administration in the Dei-Dei area.

Confirming the Dei-Dei warehouse looting, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, assured that the situation had been contained.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army confirmed the foiled attack on a private warehouse in the Idu Industrial area, stating that five suspects were apprehended in possession of looted items. Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, indicated that the suspects would undergo preliminary investigations before being handed over to the police.

Providing details of the Idu factory attack, a source revealed that a large group of about 200 to 300 individuals armed with sticks and long knives attempted to raid the facility on Sunday morning.

These incidents underscore the importance of robust security measures to safeguard vital facilities and prevent further disruptions amidst prevailing economic challenges.
